South Queensferry resident and Dalmeny and Queensferry Parish Church Minister, David Cameron, has decided to sponsor Barack Obama, a boy from Kenya, through Child Development Charity, Compassion UK.
David, who has been minister of Dalmeny and Queensferry Churches for over seven years, invited spokespeople from Compassion UK to share the news of their work at the Sunday services. A handful of children were sponsored including one child who the children of Dalmeny Sunday School decided to support.
7-year-old Barack Obama lives in the Samburu region of Kenya, with four siblings under the care of his parents. Typical houses in his area are constructed of dirt floors and grass walls. Most adults in his neighbourhood are unemployed but some work as animal herders, earning the equivalent of around £20 per month.
This year, the children at Dalmeny Parish Church will be running creative fundraising activities. The proceeds will be used to support their nominated sponsored child. A few weeks ago the children planned a presentation about their new friend and the congregation gave generously in response – getting the fundraising off to a good start.
David reflects, “I’m delighted that my family and I have started a sponsorship with Barack Obama. We were chuffed when we saw his child profile and so we decided to sponsor him. Having been in Kenya on a number of occasions it is a place that is particularly close to my heart I’m delighted to be a part of Compassion UK’s significant work in Kenya and beyond.”
