Praise God for access to safe water!

In Nyamenge village in eastern Rwanda, children like 9-year-old Janet used to face a daily struggle to collect water. Compassion’s partner, Eglise Vivante De Jesus Christ Au Rwanda, repeatedly saw children getting sick from drinking unsafe water sources. Last year, 20 children were diagnosed with intestinal worms and skin infections, whilst 12 were admitted to hospital with typhoid-related complications.   

“Waterborne diseases were common, and children were most affected,” explains Nyirakumi Devine, the health worker at the project. Children were spending more and more time in hospital, missing school and project activities.

The church prayed persistently for a solution. They’re overjoyed to share the good news that their prayers have been answered.

Thanks to a RESPOND Initiative, a 110,000 litre underground water tank has been installed behind the church building. The children are thrilled to have better access to safe water. Janet is especially delighted, explaining, “The water is very clean, and it’s also near my home”.

Pastor Innocent Nyirigango sees a close connection between provision of social amenities and evangelism —this water source is meeting more than just the physical thirst.

“By bringing these facilities closer to the community, we are able to reach families with the gospel, address economic development issues and speak against social inequalities,” he says.
