A 7.2 magnitude earthquake ripped through the western region of Haiti on Saturday 14 August. Schools, churches, and homes were among the buildings destroyed. At least 2,200 people have died in the earthquake. Nearly 10,000 people have been injured, and an unknown number are still missing.
46 of our church partners have been impacted, affecting about 17,000 children. Communities were also buffeted by strong winds and heavy rain as tropical storm Grace made landfall a few days later.
In the days, weeks and months to come, Compassion will be responding with food kits, emergency shelter for families who lost their homes, trauma support, child protection measures, rebuilding projects to be earthquake proof and more.
We can only do this with God's provision and your support. Give now to our emergency appeal and help thousands of children and families recover from this natural disaster.
Some of the questions you may have about the Haiti disaster.
We are currently undertaking a full assessment of the damage and impact caused by the earthquake, and we are yet to receive information about individual children. There are at least 17,000 children to locate and check across a region where all the infrastructure has been destroyed so it will take time. We will contact sponsors as soon as we hear if any child or young person has been badly impacted by the earthquake.
Our immediate response was to fully assess the extent of the damage and to provide food, shelter and medical supplies to those needing immediate help. As well as child protection and trauma support measures. Now immediate needs have been met, our focus has shifted towards enabling our Compassion projects to reopen – initially in temporary accommodation while damaged buildings are repaired or rebuilt – as well as efforts to rebuild livelihoods for young people and adults in the area. If in the unlikely event that more money is raised than can be spent in response to this earthquake, then funds will be used for other disaster needs in Haiti and around the world.

Give now to help the most vulnerable children, families and communities affected by the earthquake.
