For babies born into poverty, the first 1,000 days of life are critical to survival. Our Child Survival interventions keep mums safe during their pregnancy by providing pre-natal and post-natal care, including check-ups, vaccinations and the presence of a medical professional during childbirth.
What’s more, they help babies reach their first birthday by ensuring precious children receive vaccinations, vitamins, nutritional supplements and growth checks.
When Geraldine found out she was pregnant, she lost her home. Without money, shelter or family to turn to, she had to ask around to see if anyone in her community, one of the most dangerous areas of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, could put her up for the night. Sometimes, she had no option but to sleep on the street.
Geraldine turned to her local church for support, and is now receiving help from Compassion’s Survival Interventions for mothers and babies.
“Joining the Survival Programme has been an immense blessing to me,” she says.
Now, Geraldine and her baby boy, Richardelin, have a safe home. The Survival Programme took care of Geraldine’s rent and living expenses, while supporting her to launch a laundry business to earn a regular income. Regular medical visits and food packages are helping mother and baby to thrive.
“I cannot thank God enough — and the Compassion staff — for all they have brought to my life in such a short time.’’
